Prashant Bhushan

Prashant Bhushan is a senior advocate of the Supreme Court of India and a prominent public interest lawyer, widely recognised for his work in constitutional litigation, judicial accountability, and anti-corruption advocacy.

Born on 15 October 1956, he is the son of Shanti Bhushan, a distinguished jurist and former Union Law Minister. Prashant Bhushan was educated at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras before pursuing law, and he has since built a career centred on public interest litigation.

Legal Career

Bhushan has been involved in numerous significant cases before the Supreme Court and High Courts, particularly in the areas of:

• Judicial accountability and transparency

• Environmental protection

• Human rights and civil liberties

• Anti-corruption litigation

He has been a key figure in several landmark public interest cases, often representing petitioners challenging governmental actions and institutional practices.

Public Role and Activism

He was a central figure in the India Against Corruption movement, which advocated for the establishment of a Jan Lokpal (ombudsman) to address corruption in public office. His work during this period brought him national prominence as a leading voice in anti-corruption efforts.

Bhushan is also associated with the Campaign for Judicial Accountability and Reforms, through which he has consistently advocated for greater transparency and reforms within the judiciary.
